If you're a parent thinking about martial arts for your child, there's one question that comes before all the others: is it safe?

It's the question we're asked most at T45, so here's an honest answer - what Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ) involves, how we keep kids safe, and why we believe it's one of the best activities a child can do.

No punching, no kicking

Jiujitsu is a grappling art. Instead of striking, kids learn to control a partner using balance, leverage and position. That makes it very different from many other martial arts. There are no blows to the head and no one is trying to hurt anyone. The aim is to get into a better position and hold it.

Tapping: the first thing every child learns

Before kids learn any technique, they learn to tap. Tapping on your partner or the mat - means "stop", and the round ends instantly. Just as important, kids learn to let go the moment their partner taps.

It's a simple rule, but it teaches something powerful: knowing your own limits, and respecting someone else's.

Classes built for each age

At T45, kids and teens train in separate age groups:

  • Little Ninjas (4-7) - movement, coordination, listening skills and some basic Jiujitsu skills
  • Juvenile Jiujitsu (8-12) - real technique, introduced step by step
  • Teens Jiujitsu (13-17) - closer to the adult curriculum but still a place for them to train with their peers Techniques and intensity are matched to each age. Younger children aren't doing anything their bodies aren't ready for, and every class is led and closely supervised by our coaches.

What about injuries?

Like any active sport - football, hurling, gymnastics - there's always some risk of bumps and knocks. But in a well-coached kids class, serious injuries are rare. The things that keep kids safe are the same things that make them better at Jiujitsu: controlled pace, clear rules, a culture of looking after your partner, and coaches who step in early.

If your child has an existing injury or medical condition, tell us before their first class and we'll adapt their training.

The bigger kind of safety

Here's the part parents often don't expect. Kids who train Jiujitsu learn how to stay calm when someone is pushing against them. They learn they can handle being uncomfortable, solve the problem and come out the other side.

That builds real, earned confidence - and confident kids tend to carry themselves differently. In a world where bullying is a real worry for many parents, that matters.

What else they get out of it

  • Focus - following instructions and remembering sequences
  • Resilience – getting stuck is normal, and you keep going
  • Respect – for coaches, partners and themselves
  • Fitness – without it ever feeling like "exercise"

Most parents tell us the first changes they notice aren't on the mats. They're at home and in school.
